Weekly Update: 1-8 July

It’s been a busy week for us at Dahab Cats, here’s what we’ve been up to…

Cats

We were dealing with an outbreak of calicivirus at the shelter and many of our cats had to be quarantined (much to the dismay of their little hearts!).

Calicivirus is a tricky disease, causing cats some serious discomfort with sneezing fits and crusty eyes. It’s highly contagious and can survive on dry surfaces for up to a month. We’ve written an article about it here.

Thankfully, all our cats are recovering well and our shelter is virus-free again - although some kitties are still in quarantine. Here’s Gizmo, one of our best climbers, and she just wanted to be free already!

We’ve also been caring for a cat who was brought to us from St. Catherine with a horrible tooth infection. She’s beautiful, with dark, fluffy fur and glowing green eyes. She’s terrified of people and uninterested in the other cats - but now that we have had her rotten teeth extracted, she’s eating and cleaning herself again!

Some street cats visit us from time to time, and one of them is the notorious Frasier: an unneutered male. Our next mission is to gently capture and neuter him, but he may just be too smart for us…

Kittens

There has been a fungal outbreak amongst our little kittens, thankfully, only two are seriously affected. Here they are, a little disgruntled after their bath:

We were also gifted two infant kittens by some children. This was a difficult situation! The kittens are from different litters, and far too young to be away from their mothers.

The best practice in situations like this is to leave young kittens where you find them, even if they appear to be alone. Their mother is probably hunting nearby and will come back for them.

But there is some good news: these two littlest ones have developed a friendship and are growing stronger every day.

Adoptions

We are so, so, so happy that Rupert has been adopted! Rupert is the sweetest cat with the personality of an old man who is simply content with his life, he has seen and felt it all. He’s just recovered from calicivirus and he’s battling some kidney issues, but he continues to be his gentle and loving self. And soon, he will fly to France for his next adventure! Here he is, doing his best impression of a mop:
