100 Cats, 5 Days
Earlier this month we completed a five day TNR with the amazing team of vets from amc-SNAP. We set ourselves an ambitious target of capturing and neutering 100 street cats over the five days and we were over the moon to meet it.
Our focus was on one area on Dahab’s main promenade from the bridge to Sharks restaurant, so quite a small area. We caught and neutered males and females older than 4 months. We did it this way because TNR best practice is that 80% of all cats in one area have to be neutered to have a sustainable effect on population numbers.
We caught cats twice a day in the morning and the evening so the cats could be starved for an appropriate length of time before surgery. This prevents the cats from vomiting during the operation which is very dangerous for them.
All the cats got a general health check and the vets took any necessary action, for example, cleaning eyes or ears or removing teeth.
All cats stayed in the facility for a minimum of a day after neutering and were released once the vets were satisfied they were ready to go back. Our volunteers checked on the cats again in the following days to make sure they were okay.
We could not have achieved all we did without the generous support of the wonderful people of Dahab. We feel so grateful and privileged to be part of such an amazing and caring community.
Special thanks must go to:
The Mayor, the City Council and the Veterinarian Authority for facilitating all necessary approvals for the TNR
The wonderful Ark animal care owners: Dr. Mina Atef Roshdy and Dr. Mohamed AbdelAziz for going above and beyond their call of duty and performing jaw repair surgery to one of the rescue cats, performing several neutering for cryptic males and a couple of teeth removals of those with severe teeth infections!
the amazing Rasha for managing the team and to Ahmed for his great assistance
our great Dahab Cats team of volunteers
our wonderful supporters and donors, including Katy for providing our surgical tables
Gargabeta Hotel for donating one of the vet's hotel rooms and for accommodating them during their stay

We are currently planning the next TNR so stay tuned for more on that very soon!
